Solid State (Middlesbrough, John Maine, 1985)

Another piece tucked away on Victoria Road (next to the Mechanical Arch, and Head, Hand & Tool). John Maine’s Solid State was installed in 1985.

Here’s an extract from the Public Monuments & Sculpture Association on the sculpture:

“A carved star-like form made of concrete. At first glance it seems to be composed of small facets but on further inspection it becomes apparent that these facets are pieces of three larger volumes which cut into each other.

Produced in 1978 Solid State was purchased for £4,000 with the help of Northern Arts, Cleveland County Council and a Government Purchase Grant Fund in 1985 and forms part of the Cleveland Gallery’s permanent outdoor collection. The artist has commented that the star-shaped form hovers between being crystalline and like the bud of a plant.”
